Donna Mae DePolaDonna Mae DePola is a lesbian, substance abuse counselor, author and founder of the Resource Training Center. From ages five to seventeen she was raped and molested on a daily basis by her father. When her father passed away, she discovered twelve film canisters documenting the abuse. The trauma prompted her to write a book about the experience called “The Twelve Tins.”

Donna Mae will also be the feature interview in the August issue.  It should prove to be a very powerful interview!

Almost from the beginning she turned to alcohol and drugs to deal with the pain, becoming at its worst a four thousand dollar a week substance abuse problem. She has been clean for over twenty five years and is determined to end the stigma associated with addiction so that people are no longer ashamed or embarrassed to get help. She is passionate about giving those who want help a second chance.

Resource Training Center

In 1994, Donna Mae founded The Resource Training Center (TRTC), a school that provides the education required to become a Credentialed Alcohol & Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) in New York State, the largest of its kind. From a single location in Brooklyn, New York, she continued to grow the agency to where a single location couldn’t meet the demand. As of today the school has 5 locations; Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Beacon and Buffalo. Additionally, TRTC provides The New York State Drinking Driver Program, in which DWI offenders must participate in order to retain their driver’s license. TRTC has also partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to provide the Victim Impact Panel, a court mandated seminar for DWI offenders, where victims of DWI crashes share their experiences and loss.

Resource Counseling Center

In addition, Ms. DePola is the Founder and Director of The Resource Counseling Center, an outpatient Chemical Dependency Program, at TRTC’s Brooklyn location. Donna Mae DePola has founded The Recovery and Life Coaching Academy, where students can receive recovery coach training. In February of 2013, the Academy launched New York’s first Addiction Recovery Telephone Support Line helping those in recovery.
