Our Fight For Love

Donny Winter is a gay rights activist on YouTube and recently graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in English and Anthropology. He’s aiming to publish a manuscript of LGBTQ-themed poetry and write a memoir of his high school days where he was a victim of frequent bullying.
Most LGBTQ individuals have more than likely experienced individuals who’ve told them that their love isn’t ‘legitimate’ because it isn’t the ‘standard’ or the ‘norm.’ In fact I personally have been told by a few people that gay love has a lustful sup-par copy of straight love.
I began to examine what my own personal definition of love is: commitment, sharing experiences and the desire to self-sacrifice for another. Universally love genuinely is reflected through those three ideas therefore making ‘gay love’ just as legitimate as ‘straight love.’
Another thing that makes our love just as the legitimate is the fact that we’ve fought for years for the love everyone else has frowned upon. Every day depending on where we are we have to face hate-language, unwelcome stares and discriminatory behavior. With same-sex marriage being legalized in state-after-state, people are beginning to realize that same-sex love is gaining wider approval from the population, yet there’s still a long road ahead of us on our fight. Until that last thread of hate fades in the light of awareness, full equality will not be achieved. But it will happen sooner or later.
In my eyes, having to fight for the love I have for my significant other has made me appreciate companionship much more. Legitimate love is fought for, not a religious convenience.
