Born in Syracuse, NY to a military family, transgender pageant model Vanilla Carter’s childhood was a constant storm, filled with trials she never asked for but ultimately overcame. She grew up in a heavy Christian family environment where being who she is today was not allowed. Her young life was marked by all forms of abuse—mental, physical, emotional, and even sexual, all at the hands of her father. She endured hardship and faced homelessness at every turn, and by the age of 4, Vanilla found herself in the foster care system. Though it was meant to be a refuge, even there, she continued to face abuse and instability, moving from one place to the next.

Yet, through it all, she never let her struggles break her. In December, Carter will compete at the Miss International Queen – USA pageant, taking place at Harrah’s in Las Vegas. Miss International Queen – USA is the premier beauty pageant for transgender women in the United States. Vanilla will compete against over 25 other trans women from across the USA for the prestigious title.

We spoke with the Syracuse native from her home in Seattle.

Vanilla Carter: Despite so many challenges, I carried a light with me that was unmistakable, finding joy in the world around me. Sports and activities were my refuge; they kept me focused, grounded, and out of trouble. I poured myself into singing, dancing, and creating choreographed performances for my neighborhood friends. Dance was my first creative passion, and I lived for it. I was a natural artist and DIY enthusiast, always working on something new and embracing my independence.

Vanilla Carter: Growing up, I’d always dreamed of being a pageant girl—the glitz, the glam, the gowns, and the graceful glide across the stage captivated me. I first set out to Venice Beach, CA where I embraced my transition. I then rooted myself in Seattle where I am surrounded by love and authenticity. My journey in pageantry began with Miss Washington USA 2024, where I was honored as a semifinalist and was thrilled to win Miss Congeniality.

Vanilla Carter: Competing in Miss IQ is my chance to fully embrace my pageant dream, and I hope to do my very best, potentially win, and inspire my communities back home in Seattle and in upstate New York to chase their dreams without ever giving up.

Whatever the outcome, I’m excited to bring home titles that represent resilience, pride, and possibility for everyone watching.

Vanilla Carter: Beauty is defined by what’s on the inside—it’s about what your heart says, how it feels, and how it beats with life.

Vanilla Carter: Authenticity. A true beauty queen doesn’t just wear a crown; she embodies her values, passions, and experiences, and inspires others to embrace their own authenticity.

Vanilla Carter: I embody everything that the title stands for. I am dedicated to accepting everyone from all backgrounds and advocating for the respect, love, and peace that trans individuals deserve, just like anyone else. I speak for the voiceless, championing inclusivity and understanding. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels valued and empowered.

Vanilla Carter: If I were to win, my top priority would be addressing homelessness in the transgender community. Too many trans individuals grow up without the proper loving and supportive environments we deserve.

Vanilla Carter: It’s easy to get caught up in the achievements and qualities of others, but I’ve learned the importance of prioritizing my own path. My mental health is always at the forefront of my self-care, guiding me to cultivate a positive mindset and embrace my unique strengths. By staying true to myself and nurturing my well-being, I can fully engage in this experience, celebrate my individuality, and shine in my own right.

Vanilla Carter: Thank you! My parting message to all is my life’s motto: always remember your why. Understand why you do whatever it is you do. Your passions are there for a reason, guiding you toward your true purpose. Everything happens to better yourself, as long as you maintain a clear perspective. Yes, things can get crazy, but you get crazier, chasing what you want vivaciously and fervently! Never give up on that little version of you. They’re always watching and listening. Tend to yourself with love and care, nurturing your dreams and aspirations as you continue to grow.
