May 9, 2012 will go down in history as a momentous day in the battle for equality for this nation’s queer population when President Barack Obama voiced his support of same sex marriage by stating, “I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”
President Obama is the first sitting president to voice his support for marriage equality and his pronouncement is a huge advancement forward in achieving equal treatment for all citizens in this nation. Queer citizens can certainly feel a bit more connected to the inherent promise of America of liberty and justice for all. What an emotional and psychological boost it is to hear our President fully embrace this nation’s queer population as full and equal citizens.
Not only will the President’s support resonate throughout the nation and create new momentum forward in achieving full equality, I would like to think that troubled gay teens struggling with their sexuality can be comforted somewhat by hearing their President embrace them as full and equal citizens, giving those on the edge some hope that their lives will get better and to continue to forge ahead in their life’s journey.
There is a long road ahead of us before marriage equality is the law of the land. We must not let up in our efforts to achieve this ultimate goal. But for now, we can relish this huge symbolic victory and expression of support by our President.
